Parish HistoryOn December 6, 1875, the first church to be built under the patronage of Mary Immaculate was dedicated. The building of and upkeep of the church was due to the time, talent and treasure of the congregation. This church was located on what is now Madison Street. In 1899, the L&N Railroad moved its main operation to Louisville and most workers moved. The church building was torn down and was replaced by a smaller structure. In October 1948, The Record was proud to announce that a new church-school was to be built on North Fifth Avenue. It was on July 22, 1950 that the cornerstone for the new church school was laid and blessed. This church-school was designed to be very much larger than was needed to the then-present congregation. It was believed by the pastor, Fr. William H. Dierson, and forward thinking parishioners that the number of parish families would increase and therefore the congregation would “grow into” the buildings. Growth was slow and steady. It was not until 1978 that the number of parish families numbered 100. In the 1970’s, our school enrollment warranted a need for the addition of four new classrooms. In the early 1990’s, we added the Marian Center to our facilities. It contained a gymnasium, a full kitchen, offices, Preschool rooms, and meeting rooms. Some of the meeting rooms have been converted to much needed classrooms, a media center, and a computer lab. In the late 1990’s, our parish facilities again grew “too small”. Our main Sunday Liturgy had to be held in the Marian Center gymnasium to accommodate our parish family. Our pastor, Father Mark, and long time parishioners, some of whom were here in the 1950’s and 1960’s, believed we needed new worship space and we should again build for the future. We currently have over 900 registered families in our Parish. We have a certified school, a certified Preschool, a vibrant and comprehensive religious education program, and many outreach ministries and service organizations. |
